History and development of the Miniature Schnauzer in Israel Print E-mail
Schnauzer drawingsThe history of the Miniature Schnauzer in Israel began in 1971 with the black and silver variety and has since been continued intensively and successfully. The story of the salt and pepper miniature in Israel was cut short in the late 1970’s. It began in 1967 when a pair of salt and pepper from the well-known Swiss kennel Schnauzis arrived and were the first to be entered in the Israeli stud book. The Dror family’s Biber kennel took in the two dogs and had the first litter in October 1968. Four puppies were whelped, including Otzik Biber, a true black and silver, to everyone’s surprise. Later, another dog and bitch arrived from the United States and one of their offspring, Sandy Avigur, was the first of the breed to become Israeli champion. Mrs. Schiller’s Sandy was the foundation bitch of the successful Julie’s Kennel. In the late 70’s, Mrs. Schiller left Israel taking her best dogs with her. We thus lost the miniature black and silver dogs with all but sporadic litters every now and then.

Otzik Biber, the first locally bred black and silver born in a litter of salt and pepper, was joined in 1971 by Gilong Dandy from the USA and Lara Barbanera of Switzerland and together they provided the foundation for Itzhak Shkedi’s Bar Luz kennel in Kibbutz Givat Haim Ichud. The kennel imported additional dogs and began to flourish. Shkedi exported several dogs to Europe with excellent results. Israeli bred black and silver Bar Luz dogs and their offspring succeed in major European shows building the kennel’s first class reputation. In 1982, a new addition arrived from the United States, a beautiful puppy, Titan Enfiger, who left his impression with his excellent offspring in Israel and abroad. Many of Titan’s offspring were exported to Germany, France and Italy. The famous Italian kennel Scedir deserves particular mention since it set off in 1982 with Sabina and Nicholas Bar Luz and later continued to add Israeli dogs. Many Scedir dogs, on the other hand, have been brought to Israel to improve local black and silver breeding.dog-on-carpet
Many European Miniature Schnauzer breeders are using American dogs to integrate into European breeding properties including elegance, elongated heads, better toplines, good angulation and strong bones; actually – this same type was being created back in 1972 by Bar Luz in Israel.

Only few black Miniature Schnauzers have been brought to Israel and no litters were entered in the stud book. In late 1992, the initiative came and five beautiful dogs were imported to Israel, a dog and bitch from England, a bitch from Italy and two additional dogs from the Netherlands, with the intent to begin intensive breeding of this beautiful breed in Kishorit’s new canine project. The project was to provide both therapy and an additional source of occupation for village residents.
