| The Schnauzer Temperament |

The myth that adhered to the Schnauzer claiming it is an aggressive breed is completely untrue. All Schnauzers are suspicious by nature and many relate this suspicion to fear. On the contrary, the Schnauzer is a fearless dog with quite a bit of curiosity and sass and it feels oblige to investigate anything that arouses its curiosity. The Schnauzer’s sensitivity and awareness to its surroundings turn it into a wonderful watchdog with honed, primed senses.
The Schnauzer may be a snob around strangers. When a stranger approaches a Schnauzer it does not bite out of fear, it just exhibits lack of interest, turns it head and walks away. The Schnauzer is definitely a family dog, but always chooses the family member dearest to its heart, not necessarily the person who feeds it. This selection is based on personal sympathy. The Schnauzer is a happy, playful dog that easily relates to children and takes active part in their games. However, when it decides it’s had enough, it will walk away even in mid-game. The Schnauzer’s territorial instinct is quite well developed and woe becomes anyone that dares enter uninvited. It marks its borders and guards them well. They can include the home, yard, car and any other place it determines belongs to its owner. Anything that occurs beyond these imaginary borders is of no interest to it. Schnauzers have been called “ratters’ and they are excited by the chase even more than the actual kill. They will chase cats, rabbits, birds and anything else that moves, with intent to chase and catch it, but that’s that – it then loses interest in this prey and goes out in search of another victim. Schnauzers love open spaces. To burn off energy, it is in constant motion at the park, the beach, orchards or any other space, but always retains eye contact with its owner. At home it is sedate, does not require particularly large living space and makes do with its corner where it curls up and forgets the world until its next outing. The Schnauzer loves water. It catches waves in the sea, dips in the lake at the park and jumps into any puddle that comes its way. However, it shuns walks in the rain (it may get wet) and when given the chance will leave you out in the rain and find the quickest way home. The Miniature Schnauzer is the perfect house dog due to its size. Its temperament resembles its larger siblings, but due to its dimensions it is easy to control and educate. It does not take up much space at home, is friendly and enjoys the companionship of other pets, both dogs and cats. As you can see, one must get acquainted with the Schnauzer and understand its ways. It is sensitive, good looking and knows exactly what it wants and particularly what it doesn’t want. Any Schnauzer may be educated and taught basic discipline. Shouting and beating will not help persuade it to do anything, one must reach its logic, and believe me it does have logic, to attain great satisfaction from the dog. Perhaps not everyone can appreciate the Schnauzer’s character, but when you manage to reach into its soul and become guests there, you will not want to make do with any other breeds. Schnauzer – a breed for life!
